In this National Apprenticeship Week 2026, we shine a spotlight on our Backstage skills and development scheme

Eighteen young people were welcomed to the RSC for a three-day residential as part of our skills and development scheme, Next Generation: Backstage.

The group worked across technical disciplines including stage management, lighting, sound, props, stage, costume, and wigs, hair and make-up to stage a 15-minute extract of a play with professional actors. They were trained and supported by staff from our technical and craft teams.

As well as producing a performance, the group took part in a comprehensive and immersive programme, including costume and wigs fittings, production meetings, technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals and a workshop with Guildford School of Acting.

The participants were recruited through our Associate Schools, some of them having previously seen and engaged with an RSC First Encounters with Shakespeare production. This recruitment approach enables us to commit to young people on a long-term progress, nurturing their progress from first experiences of theatre to taking professional work in the theatre industry.

Tommy and Penny were two of the participants this year. Penny is applying to study stage management at university or drama college, and Tommy is interested in embarking on a career in costume or wardrobe.

Tommy said:

“I was very happy with the programme as it is a great opportunity for young people to experience running a show and get their first taste of backstage work. I thought the week was very accessible and was an incredible work environment, encouraging the participants to be curious and ask more questions.”

Penny added:

“I improved my confidence in leading a tech... It has given me a deeper understanding of industry procedures which will be helpful to understand going into my next stage of study.”

Next Generation is our long-term talent development programme for young people, working across three areas – Act, Direct and Backstage. In partnership with our Associate Schools and Associate Regional Theatre Partners, we offer a platform for young people to develop their skills, create productions and take their first steps into the theatre industry.

Previous Backstage participants have secured roles with organisations including the Royal Opera House, LAMDA and the RSC.

RSC Early Careers Manager, Kieran Corrigan said:

"The 2026 Next Generation Backstage cohort was a joy to work with. Seeing previous participants return more confident, more capable and ready to take on new challenges was an important reminder of the impact that programmes like Next Gen Backstage can have. Their growth showed what’s possible when young people are given sustained access, real responsibility and meaningful support within backstage environments. We were also fortunate to have an incredible group of new participants whose energy and potential shone from the start. Together, they made this year’s programme one to be proud of."
