Part of 37 Plays, a national playwriting project to create a series of 37 brand new plays that reflect the world we live in today.
SYNOPSIS
When Kingmead Police Department receives the ultimate severed virtue signal in a box, they’re forced to come to their own reckonings of what justice should look like. Embroiled in sheer dystopian impracticality, Jack in a Box is one giant metaphor for the failings of our justice system when it comes to sexual assault. Told through the eyes of Barbara, the receptionist, this is a rare insight into the farcical social agreement to suppress your trauma and keep going in everyday rooms. It’s the processing; both before and after the big stuff. Think The Office meets Promising Young Woman. I want it to be an anthem; a tonic for the troops that are going through it and an insight for those on the sides.
About the playwright
Joanne Thomson is an Actor, Writer and Director from Glasgow. As a Royal Conservatoire of Scotland graduate and a BAFTA US Newcomer, she has worked with some of the country's most-loved theatre, starred in multiple BAFTA-winning series and has directed internationally award-winning theatre. Her writing has made the BBC Writer’s Room Top 2% and won C21’s coveted screenwriting award. Her queer, geriatric adventure pilot Spinner & Marie is currently under option with HBO’s ex-Senior VP Anne Thomopolous and her debut short film is currently short-listed for BFI funding. Jack in a Box is her first play and she’s hoping to secure a funded R&D this year to develop it further.
