SYNOPSIS

In a near future of privatised healthcare, three 'bidders' meet with the family of a comatose man whose heart may soon become available for transplant. Each bidder must persuade the family that they are the most worthy to receive the donated organ.

Ben is a teacher - a public servant - and a dad to two young girls; Ollie is a hotshot lawyer representing an extremely wealthy businessman and philanthropist; Alex is a scientist who needs to study somebody at the moment of death in order to continue her lifesaving research.

As her son Jamie lies dying, Mrs Pegson and her other son Mark must make a decision about which lives should be saved. Mrs Pegson is using the process to come to terms with the potential loss of her son, whereas Mark doesn’t think anyone deserves his brother’s heart.

With competition growing between the bidders, Ollie starts using increasingly underhand tactics to try to win the heart for his client, until tensions finally come to a head.

About the playwright

Chloe Banks is a writer who lives in Devon. She is the author of two novels - The Art of Letting Go (Thistle Publishing, 2014) and At the Bottom of the Stairs (Reflex Press, 2022). She has also written many stories - some short, some long, some prize-winning - and a handful of short plays.
