Support new writing

When the Royal Shakespeare Company was established in the early 1960s, it was with the belief that new writing was as important an element as Shakespeare.

Through our working philosophy of artist development, we have embedded writers within our acting companies, reconnected the playwright with the rehearsal process and enabled our actors to inspire and engage during the writing period. We now have playwrights writing pieces for the actors they are working with, just as Shakespeare did.

We continue to innovate, explore and create new work that resonates with the universal themes of Shakespeare’s works. We host new writing festivals at The Other Place and have created major new shows such as The Boy in the Dress, Matilda The Musical and The Whip.

Your support will:

  • Help commission writers to create innovative new productions including translations, adaptions and musical theatre productions
  • Give writers under commission the support to research and develop their writing
