Our productions of The Merchant of Venice over the years have included many famous actors playing Shylock and his nemesis Portia: Michael Redgrave and Peggy Ashcroft in 1953; Peter O’Toole and Dorothy Tutin in 1960; Eric Porter and Janet Suzman in 1965; Emrys James and Judi Dench in 1971; Patrick Stewart and Marjorie Bland in 1978; David Suchet and Sinead Cusack in 1981; Antony Sher and Deborah Findlay in 1987; and Patrick Stewart again in 2011.
