How you can use RSC images

We allow free use of our photos for personal use and private study. We also license our images for uses in other projects.

We allow free use of RSC images for personal use and private study, defined below. If you want to use one of our photos for a different kind of project, for example in a book, display or TV programme, then please complete a digital image order form and email your completed form to images@rsc.org.uk. 

Visit our image library to browse more than 4,000 pictures online – a small selection of our Shakespeare past production archive, which is constantly being added to. You can search and download low-resolution images or request photos in high-resolution.

We also have thousands of archive images which we can license that are not currently visible online. To contact our knowledgeable and experienced image licensing department for advice about any project you are working on, please email us on images@rsc.org.uk.

PERSONAL USE AND PRIVATE STUDY

 The RSC defines personal use and private study as any of the following:

  1. Reference use for academic study
  2. Pictorial reference in unpublished academic essays, dissertations or theses
  3. Visual representation in a classroom or for an educational activity (this does not include use online, in locked educational platforms, or any published/distributed educational resource)
  4. Private use at home (which does not include creation of gift materials including, but not limited to, mugs, t-shirts etc.)
